Between 15% and 18% children aged 6 to 9 years old suffer obesity and overweight problems in Peru. In order to face this situation and change food habits for total educational community, Ministries of Health (MINSA) and Education (MINEDU) started in La Libertad Region the Program HEALTHY KIOSKS on march 12.
Program was inaugurated at Panama High School, located in Trujillo, by Enrique Jacoby Martínez, Health Vice minister, and Jose Vegas Torres, his homologue for Education Ministry. ADELANTE Project also participated through Ricardo Palma High School student group, where project is being implemented.
This multisectoral initiative has the purpose to offer nutritive foods such as fruits and vegetables of high quality for children in school time in order to leave junk food progressively. The first intervention moment will consider 65 public schools from 12 country regions in priority.
ADELANTE, ADRA Peru Project has the primary goal to reduce healthy problems caused by Non-Communicable Diseases in teenagers, young and adult people from La Libertad, Lima, Callao and Arequipa regions.
